The Continuous Success of an Older Novak Djokovic

September 6, 2018

It is a no-brainer that Novak Djokovic is one of the best tennis players of all time due to his results, but it is even more amazing to see the success of Novak as he gets older.  It is a common assumption in men’s tennis that once a player hits thirty, they will slow down, as if hey almost hit a brick wall that is blocking them from success.  This is not the case for Novak as he is 31 years old, and his results have even been better later in his career.

The first major title in Novak's extravagant career came at the age of 2, in which he beat Tsonga at the Australian Open.  Ten years later, in 2018 he defeated Kevin Anderson in the finals of Wimbledon after recently coming back from a severe elbow injury that kept him out for about a year.  The difference in a player winning there first and last major title is almost never this large, except for Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer two of the other four members in “the big four” of tennis.

Djokovic has had his fair share of success in the majors, but he might be one of the most successful masters 100 tournament player of all time.  Recently, Novak beat Federer at the Cincinnati Masters tournament, which was the only masters 1000 tournament he had left to win to complete the career “golden masters.”
This means that Djokovic has won every single Masters 1000 event at least once, and most of them he won multiple times besides Cincinnati.  Novak is the only one to complete this feat in the history of tennis, which places him in a class of his own and cements his place in the history of tennis.

Not only did Djokovic win Cincinnati, but he also followed it up by getting to the semi-finals of the 2018 US Open, in which he is still playing.  He has won 21 out of his past 22 matches at this age, which is unheard of.  Federer and Nadal continued dominating the game while Novak was gone, but him coming back changes the whole dynamic of every major.

All of the success Novak is having as he gets older is only continuing to inspire the future generations of tennis that include stars such as Nick Kyrgios, Alexander Zverev, and Dominick Thiem.  The success so late allows these players to feel looser as they play because the success doesn’t have to be rushed, so it happens so early.  It gives the players hope of more time for development so there will be much more success from a more mature player later in their respective careers.
Tennis is a game on the rise in terms of international sports, but with so many stars having success late in there careers like Novak gets fans intrigued.  This occurrence is not something people are used too and provides a spark that is much needed for the sport of tennis.
